December 16, 1956 - December 5, 2012

Mike or as many called him "Higgs" was born on December 16th, 1956. He was the husband to Mitty and the loving father to Patrick, Mark, and Elizabeth. He played football at Depauw University and went on to receive his MBA from Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. Mike applied his finance and accounting degree to become a Vice President at Merrill Lynch.  He served as a significant member of the management committee responsible for overseeing the entire futures and options business at both the Chicago Board of Trade and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.

Many knew Mike as a fun, caring, and easy going guy who had a passion for golf, football, hockey, skiing, and boats. He was smart, opinionated, stubborn and hard working. When given a project or task, he gave 110%. He loved being the life of the party and was well respected by all who got to know him. Whether he was cracking an inappropriate joke or sharing stories, he seemed to always be the center of attention. Indefinitely, he could always light up the entire room.

While the outside may have seemed like a perfect picture, Mike fought internal demons day in and day out. To be fair to all, he struggled with alcohol addiction for many years and battled with sobriety time and time again. He used his addiction as a coping mechanism which ultimately led to a deep state of depression, and a hole he could never get himself out of. Mike passed away on December 5, 2012 and this world lost a person far too young. We can all look back and say what if, what could anyone have done, and dissect the why's of what happened. We have chosen to look forward and use Mike as the spark to drive change. MBH is the soul of our mission and in his memory, we raise awareness, create more channels for those in need to seek help, and reduce the stigma surrounding this very unfortunate disease.
